Determining the precise model of a No. 3 is very difficult, because the series was a huge success, and it was produced in many different versions.
The No. 3 is a fairly large folding camera that impresses with its size, even though it's smaller than the No. 3A. It's entirely covered in full-grain leather, including the inside of the lid. The case is made of wood, but the back and lid are metal.
The bellows are extended and retracted manually by pulling on the sled located at the base of the lens/shutter assembly. The bright viewfinder is equipped with a bubble level. The viewfinder is protected by a cover that also serves as a sunshade. The top glass of the viewfinder can be lifted to allow for cleaning the mirror.
The flap has two supports. The main one is on the outside and allows for vertical framing. A second, much shorter one is on the inside and allows for horizontal framing.
Right next to this support is a distance indicator, though its use is somewhat unusual. It's a rectangular prism with a rotating shaft running its length. Several offset pins are mounted on this shaft. As the shaft rotates, only one pin protrudes from the prism through slots, each corresponding to a specific distance. The carriage then comes to rest against the protruding pin. This index is typical of version G.
There is a vertical and horizontal offset. While the first is fairly obvious to find, the second requires sliding a finger behind the carriage and unlocking a lever that is completely invisible from the front.
