The Leica Standard was introduced in 1932 at the same time as the Leica II. It looked very similar to the Leica I model C, but had one feature in common with the Leica II: the rewind knob could be lifted to facilitate this operation.
The new model was officially released in October 1932 ; it was originally enameled in black. An initial run of 5,000 units was manufactured— the first bearing the serial number 101100. A number of these were likely held in storage and not sold until 1933, as only 50 new units were recorded that year on the factory's serial number list. In subsequent years, the annual average fluctuated between 3,000 and 4,000 units.
Curiously, the Standard was the only model at the time that did not bear the Leica name. However, it was inscribed on the lens cap.
This Leica Standard (Model E) , serial number 102873, produced in 1932, has a beautiful patina , revealing the brass beneath the black lacquer in places. It is free of dents. The shutter speeds function perfectly from 1/20 sec. to 1/500 sec. The viewfinder and lens are clear and scratch-free. The focus and aperture adjustments operate smoothly. There is no grease on the diaphragm blades. The Leitz Elmar 50mm lens is also free of dents but shows wear on the lens tube and front face. The vulcanite coating is in good condition and complete.
The Leica lens cap is original.
Galileo's viewfinder is clear.
