THE STORY
The "609" prefix of early Nikon cameras refers to September 1946, when the design was approved. When serial numbers reached 6099999, the engraver did not switch to 610 — he continued with 60910000, adding an eighth digit. After roughly 1,200 cameras, the factory returned to 6100000. These "8-digit" bodies are a recognised collector variant. The Nikon S (1951) was also the first Nikon exported to the United States.
WHAT MAKES THIS ONE DIFFERENT
As often seen on 8-digit bodies, the fitted back is a 7-digit replacement. But this camera comes with its ORIGINAL BACK, serial 60911002 engraved inside, matching the top plate. Heavily deteriorated and in two parts, it can no longer be fitted — but it documents the identity of this body.
CONDITION
- Body: cosmetic grade B, normal signs of use. Shutter fires at all speeds, consistent by ear (not measured on a tester). Curtains in good condition.
- Lens: Nikkor-S.C 5cm f/1.4 No. 352816 — no fungus, no haze. Slight oil on aperture blades.
- Fitted back: 7-digit replacement, different leatherette pattern.
- Original back: included, matching serial, heavily deteriorated.
