Spring-motor half-frame camera — fully working — complete with original Robot case.
CAMERA — Robot II
Condition: Excellent
The Robot II is one of the most distinctive German cameras ever made —
a spring-motor driven half-frame (24×24mm) camera producing up to
24 exposures per wind on standard 35mm film.
Originally developed for aerial reconnaissance and scientific photography,
it became a cult collector piece worldwide.
- Spring motor: Functional — winds and fires correctly.
- Shutter: Functional at all speeds.
- Film advance: Automatic spring-motor advance — characteristic
rapid-fire capability confirmed working.
- Frame counter: Present and functional.
- Viewfinder: Present and clear.
- Leatherette: Black — very good condition, no lifting.
- Top plate: Light wear marks consistent with careful use —
visible in photos.
- Badge: "ROBOT germany" chrome badge — present and clean.
LENS — Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 37.5mm f/2.8 / Serial #2018514
Condition: Excellent
The Xenar 37.5mm f/2.8 is the standard lens for the Robot II —
a Schneider-Kreuznach Tessar-type design, well-regarded for
sharpness and rendering on the 24×24mm format.
- Glass: Clean. No fungus, no haze.
- Aperture: f/2.8 to f/16 — clean blades, responsive.
- Focus: 0.5m to infinity — smooth action.
- Chrome: Well-preserved.
LEATHER CASE
- Original Robot leather ever-ready case.
- "ROBOT" embossed on front lens cap cover.
- Brown leather — worn but intact, fully functional.
- Period strap present.
- A genuine Robot case in any condition is increasingly
difficult to find — most Robot IIs on the market are case-only.
THE ROBOT SYSTEM
The Robot II (produced 1938–1952) is a landmark in camera design.
Its spring-motor drive — wound with a single turn of the large
top-plate knob — automatically advances the film after each exposure,
enabling rapid sequential shooting decades before motor drives existed.
The 24×24mm square format produces up to 50 half-frames on a
standard 36-exposure roll — making it uniquely economical and versatile.
Originally used by the Luftwaffe for reconnaissance photography,
the Robot II became a favourite of press photographers and scientists
for its reliability and speed.
